Pukeko (Swamp Hen)

The Pukeko, widespread throughout our lowlands, grow to 44-48 cm, have rich purple-blue underparts, a bulky red bill and white under the tail.

Red Billed Gull (tarapunga, akiaki)

It's not often you'll find a beach in New Zealand without a Red Billed Gull nearby. They're mainly coastal birds that grow to 37 cm in length.

Red Crowned Parakeet

The Red Crowned Parakeet, or kakariki, is rare and mostly found on our offshore islands. It grows to 27 cm with bright green plumage and a red capped head.

Royal Albatross (Toroa)

The Royal Albatross is one of the worlds largest flying birds, with a wing span of over 3m. The species is in severe decline with all but one colony located offshore.

Royal Spoonbill (Kotuku)

The Royal Spoonbill is fairly uncommon, with limited numbers spread throughout NZ. They're unmistakable with a unique flat, black, spoon-shaped bill.

Sacred Kingfisher

The Sacred Kingfisher is easily recognised by its large bill and short legs, and is often seen perched on power lines and fences.

Saddleback (Tieke)

Once almost extinct, the Saddleback was helped with conservation efforts. It grows to 25 cm, mostly jumps, and only flys short distances.

Silvereye (Tauhou)

The Silvereye's most characteristic feature is the white ring of feathers that surrounds each eye. Otherwise, it's light greenish in colour with near white underparts.
